Swimming for Macmillan Cancer Support

We are delighted to be working with Macmillan Cancer Support this year in helping them reach their fundraising targets. The money raised will help people with cancer throughout Scotland and the UK.

There are so many deserving causes and charities in the UK, so it can be difficult to choose one to support. However, cancer is so prevalent that we all know someone affected by it. It is estimated that there are 3 million people in the UK currently living with cancer. In Scotland alone, 90 people each day receive a diagnosis of cancer.

Cancer incidence has risen by 40% since 2002, a very startling figure. As pointed out by Macmillan, some of that will be due to a growing aging population who are more at risk of developing cancer. It’s also because there have been improvements in diagnosis and a growing public awareness of looking for symptoms.

By 2040, the number of people living with cancer is set to increase to around 5 million. Although cancer survival rates have increased since the 1970s, there is no doubt that receiving a cancer diagnosis is a scary moment for most and that the treatment can often be gruelling, leaving long term side effects and consequences.

In face of these statistics, it seems like a huge mountain to climb in trying to support a cancer charity. However, Macmillan Cancer Support is there to help the individual and their families going through a cancer diagnosis.

Did you know that:

  • £19 could pay for a Macmillan Support Worker for 1 hour, helping people living with cancer receive the support they need.
  • £34 could pay for a Macmillan Nurse for 1 hour, helping people living with cancer and their families receive essential medical, practical, and emotional support.
  • £163 could provide emotional support to one person living with cancer for around eight weeks, through ongoing and regular support sessions with one of our Macmillan Buddies.
  • In 2022, Macmillan’s Support Line (MSL) service supported 7,923 people in Scotland.

Through your fundraising and donations, you will be helping people throughout Scotland and the UK navigate their way through this frightening time for them. Your fundraising really does make a difference to people’s lives.
