People dipping in a loch

Go Swim x Venture Scotland – a little helping hand.

When we were approached by Venture Scotland, we were interested to find out more about what they do. When we saw that it was all about encouraging people to develop their personal growth through the great outdoors, we wanted to help. SAMH remains our official charity partner for this year but we wanted to offer Venture Scotland a helping hand. Read on for what they do and how we are helping them.

Venture Scotland is an outdoor-based personal development charity working across Glasgow and Edinburgh. We believe that everyone deserves to recognise their self‑worth and have hope for their future, but for many of the young people and adults we support, that hope doesn’t come easily.

Our two main programmes support:

  • Young people aged 16–30 experiencing challenges including mental health issues, homelessness, social isolation and low self‑confidence.
  • Adults aged 18+ in addiction recovery, helping them rebuild purpose, resilience and connection.

We know that taking part in challenging activities outdoors – and placing trust in our staff, volunteers and fellow group members – can feel daunting, especially for people who have rarely left their urban communities or experienced nature in this way before. Yet time and time again, our participants tell us that stepping into Scotland’s wild places changed their lives.

“For the first time in my life, I’m feeling excited about something… Most importantly, I’ve learned that there’s hope that things can get better. This isn’t just a course I did. This is the thing that turned my life around. I’m not the same person who walked in here feeling aimless and worthless. I’m someone with a purpose, with plans, and with hope for the future. That’s what Venture Scotland has given me – my life back.”

Through activities like weaselling, gorge-walking, coasteering, and wild camping, we empower participants to rediscover their strengths. With time and space away from familiar pressures, individuals can reflect on their beliefs, learn new ways to cope, and build confidence that carries into every part of their lives.

One participant described how early experiences at school shaped their self‑worth:

“I was always threatened from a young age that if I didn’t stick in at school, I’d end up a nobody… I took what I was told to heart and stopped trying. I thought there wasn’t a point in delaying what I viewed as inevitable. I had zero confidence in myself.”

Wild swimming captures so much of what Venture Scotland is all about. It’s a magnificent combination of incredible locations, the icy anticipation, the acclimatisation to breathtakingly cold water, the willpower to see it through, and then the brain‑quieting calm, the pride and aliveness that follows. The bright hum on your skin, the stillness, the joy of having done something hard.

These are exactly the kinds of experiences we create through our programmes: moments where participants realise, they can do difficult things, that their bodies and minds are capable of more than they believed, and that the outdoors can be a powerful source of healing.

And that’s why we’re so delighted to be part of Go Swim this year.

Go Swim have generously offered us places across their events meaning that we can offer them to participants and volunteers who may not have had the opportunity otherwise.
